SUMMARY of MANUFACTURING SUMMIT 2011:

For the fifth year, industry leaders convened in Washington, DC to address the economic importance and opportunities ahead to revitalize the manufacturing sector, to create more jobs and a stronger national and global economy.

Professionals attending from around the country representing industry, workforce development organizations, community colleges, Capitol Hill, think tanks and veterans organizations heard from The White House, President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness; The United States Army Reserves; The United States Department of Labor; The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Bloomberg Government; Georgetown University; and numerous Manufacturers, Training Centers, and Associations.

The discussion identified current challenges and successes; suggested changes in standards and certification; and discussed the role of community colleges; career opportunities for returning veterans; the Swiss apprenticeship model; apprentice programs in the U.S.; and regional training models for small and midsize manufacturers.

As the #1 foreign investor in the United States in 2010, and the second largest foreign investor overall in the U.S. manufacturing sector, Switzerland is firmly committed in its support of U.S. manufacturing.

On behalf of Switzerland Trade & Investment Promotion, our partner The National Institute for Metalworking Skills, and our sponsors Bloomberg Government, The European Chamber of Commerce in New York, swissnex Boston/Consulate of Switzerland, and the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, thank you and we hope to see you again!
